Highlights of Our Trip
Staying Local

From exploring the CN Tower and Centre Island to indulging in Yorkville's culinary delights and uncovering cultural treasures like the Bata Shoe Museum, this weekend guide captures the essence of Toronto. Whether you're planning your first visit or looking for new experiences, our blog post is packed with tips and insights to help you make the most of your trip to this dynamic city.
View of CN Tower in Toronto from the garden on Centre Island
Toronto, a city where modernity meets charm, became the perfect backdrop for our latest adventure. As avid travelers based in the U.S., our love for Canada often draws us back across the border. In our recent visit, we dedicated a weekend to exploring this vibrant metropolis, blending iconic sights with hidden gems.
Day One: Urban Exploration and Unexpected Fun
Our adventure kicked off on a gray Friday morning, setting the tone for a day of urban exploration. We started at the iconic CN Tower, an unmistakable landmark that offers breathtaking views of the city skyline. Just a stone’s throw away, we discovered a quaint open-air railway museum, a testament to Toronto’s rich history, where the sounds of bygone eras echoed through the air.
Lunch led us to Amsterdam Brewhouse, perched on the serene lakefront. This spot is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates a good brew with a side of waterfront tranquility. Post-lunch, we hopped on a water taxi bound for Centre Island, a serene escape just a short boat ride from downtown.
Centre Island was a revelation. From vast open parklands to bike rentals, it’s an oasis of outdoor activities. But what truly surprised us was Centreville, an adorable amusement park that sits unassumingly on the island. As Disney enthusiasts, we were thrilled to stumble upon this charming little park, complete with a petting zoo and a variety of rides that delighted both young and old.
The island’s beauty didn’t end there. A leisurely walk through well-maintained gardens, complete with fountains and water features, offered a moment of respite. The island’s quadricycle rentals provided a fun way to explore more of the area, and we found ourselves marveling at the 19th-century lighthouse standing proudly along the coast.
Day Two: Cultural Immersion and Surprises
Day two was all about delving into Toronto’s cultural and shopping scenes. The city’s subway system whisked us to Yorkville, a neighborhood renowned for its upscale shopping and culinary delights. Naturally, we made a beeline for Eataly, where the promise of quality Italian fare did not disappoint. The tableside caprese was a highlight, a testament to the city’s diverse and vibrant food scene.
A short walk from Yorkville brought us to the Bata Shoe Museum, an intriguing journey through 4,500 years of footwear history. The museum, with its interactive elements, proved to be a hit with our kids, blending education with entertainment in a way that only Toronto can.
As the day wound down, we meandered through Toronto’s Theatre District, a lively area that forms part of the third-largest theatre district in the world. The sights and sounds of this vibrant area were the perfect lead-up to the day’s surprise—a Toronto Blue Jays game. Our hotel, with a window that opened directly into the ballpark, provided the ultimate fan experience, allowing us to enjoy the game in comfort.
Toronto: A City of Surprises
Our weekend in Toronto was filled with unexpected delights and memorable experiences. From the bustling streets of downtown to the tranquil beauty of Centre Island, Toronto offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re exploring its cultural hotspots, indulging in its culinary delights, or simply soaking in the sights, this city is sure to leave you with a sense of wonder and a desire to return.
